The recipe for whether it has always been a simple one: Take a Honda Civic coupe or sedan. Power up. Harden the suspension and improve the brakes. Slap on some aggressive outside bits and maybe a spoiler. Take that, put it all together and have a stew, honey.
OK, it’s not that simple, but we’re talking about the kind of modifications that a teenager would make to his base model of hand-me-down given quite a bit of time and money, but as a turnkey solution with a guarantee. This new 2017 Civic if it sticks quite close to that recipe, but has some new tricks on its sleeve for this generation and an unexpected level of refinement on the road.
Honda has been busy filling the tenth-generation Civic portfolio with a sedan, coupe, and the return of the hatchback. While the common variants hold their sales duty, Honda will flavor things with the introduction of a new type R and the return of the SI familiar. Now we know how much the latter will cost.

The rest of the SI amenities are more or less identical to a non-well equipped civic model. There is a standard power solar roof and the new generation of the HondaLink of Honda Entertainment.
On the dashboard is a standard 7-inch screen audio system with standard USB connectivity, satellite radio and Bluetooth for hands-free and audio streaming. I didn’t see the on-board navigation listed among the optional features of the SI, so you’ll want to make sure you carry along a smartphone to make use of the standard Android auto or Apple playing connectivity.
Maybe my only real complaint about Dashboard technology if it is one that is shared with most of the current Honda vehicles: I wish there was a real volume knob instead of the capacitive slide that HondaLink uses.
Security technology is virtually limited to a standard rear camera and Honda’s LaneWatch blind Camera, which is also standard. With the only options available for Civic drivers if being the color, number of doors and a choice between summer tires or all of season, there is currently no way to add the Honda Sensing Suite of advanced features Driver help to mix.
2019 Honda Civic SI Specifications
Two-mode adaptive suspension The suspension department is where the If you win a few new and grown tricks. It has the requirement of more rigid springs, bushings and suspension components that we expect. However, Honda has also equipped this SI with a two-mode adaptive damping system that can be toggled between a firm sport setting and a smoother normal setting. Both settings are firmer than the suspension in the ex-T, but the normal mode is more relaxed and less rough than the sport.
This is important because at this point in price, the if it is likely to be your only car, your daily driver, so it is nice to have access to a less punishing ride when stuck in traffic or traveling to work.
The sport and the normal modes also bind in the electric power steering system and the accelerator map, adjusting the sensitivity of these systems together to the suspension. The two modes do not make the if you feel like two different cars, but you do highlight two sides of your personality.

On the road, the If you feel agile and light around the corners. The direction is direct and offers good feedback in both the normal and sport settings. The interesting thing about the adaptive suspension is that it is not a ridiculously rough ride even in the sporting setting, although the car makes corner flatter and further firmness can be felt. However, I liked the normal fit ability to take the edge of the race during the extended freeway extends to the beginning and end of my day of the canyon carving.
Acceleration feels good, too. You would be hard to notice the slight energy deficit compared to the GTI, probably because the if it is more than 200 pounds lighter than the hot VW hatch. More power would be good, obviously.
While the engine if it’s a lot of fun to finish and let go, the six-speed manual gearbox is a mixed bag. The chosen ratios feel good with reduced speeds and a high sixth gear that helps to reach a respectable city 28, 38 road and 32 MPG combined. The change itself is a joy to operate with a light, short shot and really satisfying compromise. The clutch pedal is where things start to crumble for me.
2019 Honda Civic SI Engine
205 HP Turbocharged engine
The SI is powered by the same 1.5-Liter turbocharged engine as the civic ex-T, but with a 20.3 PSI larger turbocharger that feeds it. The output is up to 205-ponies and 192 pounds-feet of torque. That’s a pretty decent hit of 31 horsepower and a very useful hit fun for most drivers. It remains a few short HP of the natural enemy Si, the Golf GTI 220 hp.
(aftermarket has already shown that non-Si turbo can be persuaded to 233 horsepower with an Add-and-Play tuning adjustment, so it is logical that the larger turbo if it is just a retune away from similar gains.)
The 205 ponies we have flowed through a six-speed manual transmission on the way to the front wheels. A standard limited slip differential ensures that most of that power actually reaches the road.

The third pedal is almost too light and has a very vague feeling at the point of engagement. On the one hand, the light clutch will probably not be fatigued in stop-and-Go traffic or daily driving. On the other hand, the lack of “bite” means making quick changes a bit of a guessing game and accurately synchronizing heels and feet difficult reductions, especially on the track at the Honda test Center.

The Civic if it is back with two models of bearing of very stylized wings: a sedan and a Coupé. The screaming VTEC engines of yesteryear are replaced by a 205-HP Turbo 1.5-Liter in line-four synchronised only to a Sweet-shifting manual six-speed gearbox. Adaptive cushions, sportier handling, and larger brakes animate the already solid Civic chassis.
