We’ve praised the revamped MDX for its accurate and natural steering feel and for cutting through turns like an SUV in half its size. Pilots likely won’t receive the same performance-oriented personality as the premium, sports-oriented MDX, but we’d still expect it to feel more lively and less sluggish than the current model.
Moving to a new platform will likely provide a new Pilot that is similar, if not identical, to the MDX dimensions. That means a slightly longer front end, which should improve handling, and more legroom all around.
We expect a 280-horsepower V6 engine to carry. It is a rugged engine that achieves competitive fuel economy and allows towing of up to 5,000 pounds. Honda could try to extract more power from it, perhaps closer to 290 hp, as it did with the new V6 MDX. A four-cylinder hybrid powertrain is a distinct possibility, better to compete with the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, although this seems more likely as a 2024 model given supply chain disruptions and parts shortages.

Anticipating a redesign for 2023, Honda dropped the entry-level trim for 2022 and offers a scaled portfolio of five trim levels: EX-L, SE (or Special Edition), Touring, Elite, and Black Edition. Acura gets a new double-wishbone front suspension for better handling and an improved dash-to-axle ratio for a sportier look by pushing the cab backwards on the vehicle.
With Honda preoccupied with smaller SUVs for now, the new Pilot won’t stop until near the end of 2022.

2023 Honda Pilot Rumors
Previously, rumors of a Pilot PHEV surfaced in the media, but recent developments suggest there are no plans for a plug-in hybrid pilot. Dave Gardner, executive vice president of National Operations, American Honda, talked about Honda and Acura’s 2022 launch plans with the media (via the Detroit Bureau) recently.

The EPA estimates the hybrid variant to produce a combined 35 city/35 highway/35 and 23 city/26 highway/25 combined, respectively. Honda must make its midsize SUV equally efficient in its next-generation to maintain its competitive position.

2023 Honda Pilot Sport
The Honda Pilot is entering the 2022 model year and the automaker has already prepared some changes to the lineup. In general, the SUV range has been simplified and there is a new entry-level class. A new report from CarsGuide highlights more of the 2022 Pilot family, based on data gleaned from a recent booking guide.
According to the online publication, the new base model is the Pilot Sport which effectively means the starting price of the 2022 Pilot will be significantly higher than that of the 2021 Pilot.
The 2022 Pilot Sport has an MSRP of $38,055 for the front-wheel-drive model and $40,055 with all-wheel drive (both including destination). In comparison, the 2021 Pilot LX has a starting price of $33,775 with FWD, which makes the 2022 model $4,280 more expensive.
However, higher prices will come with more standard equipment. The 2022 Pilot Sport will come with a choice of 20-inch Pewter Gray Alloy wheels, leather seats, and an eight-inch screen for the infotainment system.
Power will be provided by the same V6 engine available for all other trim levels. For the record, the EX trim level has also been discontinued for the new model year.
Meanwhile, CarsDirect also reports that the 2022 Pilot TrailSport will start at nearly $45,000 or, more accurately, $44,785 after a $1,225 destination fee. Expected to go on sale later this year, the off-road themed model will be equipped from the factory with 18-inch alloy wheels with US 245/60 R18 105H tires, and a leather interior.
Again, power will be provided by a 3.6-liter V6 engine mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. All-wheel drive will be standard.
