In a variety of tests, the latest Honda Civic Type R proves to be one of the best front-wheel-drive performance cars on the market. To reaffirm the capabilities of the hot hatch, Honda’s new CTR now holds the lap record for France’s Magny-Cours Grand Prix race track for front-drive series vehicles. The FIA World Touring Car Cup rider Esteban Guerrieri lapped the 2.73-mile (4.4-kilometer) track in 2:01.51.
The bourgeois type R, which Guerrieri drove, was a production spec example with road-legal tires. It was in the European melody with 316 hp (235 kilowatt) and 295 pound feet (400 Newton-meter torque), compared to the ratings of 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of the examples in the United States.
Honda Civic Type R has finally landed in the United States, but the automaker is already pointing to adding new variants. Honda wants the additional variants to keep interest in the Civic Type R, its halo in the US, alive after the first buzz has worn off. It’s a formula that has worked well for cars like the Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911, and now Honda wants to emulate it for its hot hatch.
Speaking with automotive News (subscription required), Hideki Matsumoto, chief engineer for the Civic line, said Honda was confident of adding more variants to keep the sales volume stable over the product cycle. The move could also increase the profitability of the car if the new versions are priced higher than the current $34,775 starting price.

According to Matsumoto, Honda is looking for a more powerful version as well as a softer version designed for Grand Touring. A four-wheel drive version for the better challenge of the Ford Focus RS, Subaru WRX STI and Volkswagen Golf R is also possible.
At the moment the Civic Type R is exclusively offered with a 306-horsepower turbo engine, a 6-speed manual and front-wheel drive-a mechanical device identical to the previous generation bourgeois type sold overseas. This was done to provide a link between the first civic Type R in the US and the cult status of its predecessors developed among Honda fans.
The 2018 Civic Type R comes to dealers in the US later this year, and Honda increases its base price from $605 to $35,595, including $895 target. The new model year does not bring any significant changes, but the hot hatch’s cost still undercuts competitors like the Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R.
